One of the reasons why a Green Data Center initiative recruits talent, a better night sleep

One of the funniest conversations I would have with the Olivier Sanche is how many people would reference reading my blog post on Olivier wanting to build greener data centers.

Good Luck, Olivier.  I am placing my bets Apple will change the data center industry the way they changed cell phones and media players with the iPhone and iPod.  It is not just the environmental issues, there are huge opportunities to leverage the data center servers with client devices - iPod, iPhone, and Macs.  Photos, Music, and Video and the associated media industry is Apple's strength.  Google focuses on Search.  Microsoft focuses on Windows, Office, and competing against Google.  Apple focuses on consumers.

Who do you think is going to change the data center industry the most Google, Microsoft, or Apple?

Or maybe what individuals will change the data center industry?  Keep your eye on Olivier.

Since I wrote this post about Olivier all three of these companies (Google, Microsoft, Apple) have announced green data center initiatives.

Fast Company has an interview with Srikumar S. Rao.  The following table summarizes well what Srikumar presents.

But I was surprised because the core principles of the Happiness at Work philosophy run counter to the standard profile of the typical top MBA student I’ve encountered both while at school and after (although, there are exceptions for sure).  For example here’s a quick side-by-side comparison to illustrate my point:

Happiness at Work Philosophy

Standard MBA Profile

It’s about the process, not the outcome.  Focus on the action you can take.   Outcome is all that matters—good grade, high profile job, big paycheck.
Paradox—by insisting on your way, you decrease the chance of getting what you want.  Risk and aggressiveness are rewarded.
You are playing a role, but you are not the role. My job, my prestigious MBA, my wealth define me.
It’s not about the money (in fact, if it is, you are in trouble).  It’s about the why and what you are doing.  It’s all about the money, even if I don’t love what I am doing.
The models you operate within are not reality. Prestigious MBA, well-paying job, comfortable life is reality.  And I am angry when it’s challenged.

The Q&A that follows explains the paradox of this table.

My question is why do you think the MBA students who took your class, many of whom fall within some range of that standard profile, resonated so intensely to what you were teaching?

SR: Before taking the class, they’d never heard anyone encourage them to get a deep sense of meaning from what they wanted to do professionally.  Many of the students have had the same background.  Some have already worked for McKinsey or Goldman Sachs, the brass ring of what many go to business school to achieve, and hated it because they were treated badly.  They face the sharp dichotomy between what they think the want and what they’d really like to do.

The class gave students the courage to consider doing something different. To question their basic assumptions—what do I want to pursue beyond a paycheck?  The course legitimized those questions and provided the support of a group that was doing the same thing.

(Srikumar S. Rao’s TED Talk (video)—”Plug into your hard-wired happiness”)

More and more the talented people are looking to work differently than it is all about the money and power.

Thanks to others discussing the green data center topic there are more and more people who have pride in lowering the carbon impact of their data centers, making in greener.

How many of you feel good about saying I saved $10 million in operating expense vs. I reduced the carbon impact of the data center by 15%?  What makes you sleep better at night and wake-up energized?

News on Apple's Green Data Center

ZDNet's David Chernicoff posts on Apple's Green Data Center.

Is a 100% green datacenter practical, or even plausible?

By  | May 18, 2012, 6:01am PDT

Summary: 100% renewable energy sounds great. But when you start to do the research the picture is much less clear.

Working hard to keep up their public face of being the company of unicorns and rainbows, Apple seems to be making themselves the standard bearer for green power for the datacenter.  After constant negative publicity from Greenpeace on the use of power from non-green sources, Apple is taking the approach that a commitment to green power will be a major win, at least in the field of public opinion.

This post would lead some to believe that Greenpeace is creating pressure for Apple to use renewable energy.  The green data center effort in my opinion was actually most influenced by our departed friend Olivier Sanche, and his efforts are just now becoming public.

It will be interesting as Greenpeace continues its environmental PR war with Apple. The one thing different about Apple vs. other Greenpeace targets is the Apple PR machine and the Apple loyal user base are 10X bigger than any other past Greenpeace targets.  Who will win the PR battle?  uhh, Apple vs. Greenpeace. Who do you love?  A user base who users their products hours and hours a day?  BP, Nestle, Unilever and other Greenpeace targets have how many people who love their brand?

If you don't have a green data center strategy, then you better get ready.  All this press wakes people up to the environmental impact of data centers.

How I Attend a Conference is Tiring, allow for downtime

I've just spent two days at the Open Compute Summit and my brain is still decompressing from all the activity.

Everybody has a different style on how they attend conferences.  Some want to try and meet as many people as they can looking for the whales like the casino industry looks for the high roller.  This method is favored by many sales people.

Technology people are looking for newest SW and HW.

Out of 500 people attending the Open Compute Summit, I have 7 new business cards.   So, you can tell I  don't believe in the idea of having to work a room to build your rolodex.

I focused on talking to the influentials and the thought leaders.  People who I met for the first time, we talked about big ideas to see where they are at.  Some people I have known in e-mail or phone, but not met in person.  But, the vast majority of people i talked to where people I have met in the past, and we can exchange new ideas.

Now, some may attend to catch up almost like a reunion, but that is kind of limiting for me.  What is much more interesting is understanding how the ecosystem is working.  Who is there.  Who is not.  Who is talking to who.  Who is presenting and driving new ideas.  How things are changing vs. previous events.  How this event compares to others.  Then, you start to discover new patterns of ideas.  The ideas that are thought leaderships type.

On the plane trip out I watched Sherlock Holmes 2 and power of deduction has been morphed into almost superhuman powers.

Here is a well thought out 12 steps of How to Develop Sherlock Holmes Intuition.  I really like #10.

Talk through your conclusion with a trusted person.

Talk through your conclusion with a trusted person.

Talk through your conclusion with a trusted person. Holmes was a guarded person andtrusted people only when they had proven themselves trustworthy and loyal. In turn, those persons had Holmes' complete trust, such as Watson. By the same token, "nothing clears up a case so much as stating it to another person.",[13] so be sure to open up and talk through your conclusions with someone you do trust, to use them as a sounding board when you've worked through the deductions.

One of the things that makes a conference more enjoyable is having a partner, like Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, discussing analyzing, criticizing, exchanging ideas.  Olivier Sanche was one of those guys who was a partner.  And, at OCP i had a partner I trusted to discuss conclusions I had come to.

After 2 days of intense analysis I especially like the last point.  Getting home it is family time, and we are getting a new ping pong table to play as a  family.

Plan downtime, party time, and leisure time into your life. Sherlock Holmes worked hard when sleuthing but he also loved his leisure and being languid.[15] Deducing things and pushing your intuition to its limits can wear you down and rejuvenation is an essential part of ensuring that you continue to stay sharp, focused, and clever.

Earth Day + Data Centers = Remembering Our Dear Friend Olivier Sanche a man with passion to do the right thing and green the data center

Sunday April 22, 2012 is Earth Day.

NewImage

For the past couple of weeks I have received numerous e-mails on Earth Day products, events, etc.

But when I get up in the morning and think of Earth Day and the data center industry the first that comes to mind is my dear departed friend Olivier Sanche.

NewImage

One of the best memories and experiences in my life is to have spent so much time with Olivier, hanging out at the construction site, hanging out at data center events, sitting in data center meetings, his going away party at eBay, eating meals, meeting his family especially his daughter Emilie, and discussing the way things should be. Olivier had a passion that gave him the vision to do things few thought were important.

Here is Olivier at SLC at the eBay data center site.

NewImage

Olivier speaking at Google's 1st data center energy efficiency summit.

NewImage

When Olivier was on this panel he said the following.

Olivier Sanche starts by telling the story of his child telling him how the polar bears are drowning, then he thinks he is potentially building a data center that will have a bigger impact to global warming than any other action he has as an individual.  Olivier tells his team we need to do the right thing, and how we impact the environment is part of the equation.

This last part is why when I think of Earth Day and Data Centers I think of my dear friend Olivier Sanche.

There are others who I also think of who have the same passion of Olivier, and thankfully they are still with us, trying to figure out how to green the data center.

I think today is a good day to think good thoughts and what Olivier would do.

One year later, words to remember our Dear Friend Olivier Sanche

In conversations with Olivier Sanche's wife, she had mentioned a simple request she had made to Apple to plant a tree in memory of Olivier. Her request was not answered, so I offered to contact eBay's VP of Technical Operations, Mazen Rawashdeh. Mazen supported the request and made the executive decision to plant a tree at the data center Olivier designed and built in Salt Lake City.

In addition to the tree eBay planted they created a plaque.

NewImage

"The tree is a slow, enduring force straining to win the sky. - Antoine De Saint-Exupery, The Wisdom of the Sands"

"This tree is dedicated to the memory of Olivier Sanche who passed away on November 26, 2010. Olivier was a colleague, peer, mentor, and friend to many in the eBay family. At his memorial he was remembered as someone who lit up a room whenever he entered in through his big personality and solid foundation. The tree symbolizes that seed of friendship, wisdom, and inspiration that he planted with so many. May it, like his memory, continue to grow."

The above plaque was set  in Aug 2011, and KC Mares even posts in Sept 2011 about the plaque, tree, and conference room named after Olivier.  I have been waiting for eBay to post something official, but I must have missed the notices and I can't find it on the web. When I contacted Olivier's wife to ask what she thought of the plaque, she said no one from eBay had contacted her regarding the memorial efforts.  So, I decided to move on my own and ask a few friends to contribute their words to remember Olivier by.

NewImage

First, Mike Manos's (AOL) words.

Olivier was a man of quiet action.  Benjamin Franklin said “If you would not be forgotten as soon as you are dead, either write things worth reading or do things worth writing.”  There is not a month that goes by where I am reminded of my conversations with Olivier.  His influence is still felt throughout our industry and his passion has left an indelible mark that has changed our industry for the better.  True leadership comes from passion and heart.  Olivier had plenty of both.  It’s a rare thing especially when you compare it to many of the ‘pretenders and self-promoters’ who have come after.  His influence was soft but strong, not in-your-face but analytical and probing.  He led you down a path so you understood his position and hopefully adopted it as your own.   Oliver remains a strong voice amongst us and his legacy will be felt for years to come.   On a personal note I continue to miss and mourn a good friend taken far too early.

Nic Bustamente (Microsoft).

Christian [Belady] and I were just talking about him recently, it doesn't seem like a year's gone by. We sat in stunned silence thinking about Olivier . . . . it's still shocking.

Joe Kava (Google)

it's hard to believe that more than a year has gone by since Olivier's passing.  I think the fact that many industry notables still speak so fondly of him is a tribute to what a great person he was.  Genuinely one of the "good guys" who really cared and poured his heart into what he was passionate about... his family, his work, the environment, etc.
I continue to miss him.

Olivier was a friend and mentor in so many ways.  We would argue to the point of people entering the room to see if we were ok, then we would head of to a night of dinner and drinks together.  I really miss his smile and his way of looking at things.  I would like to make sure that his memory is maintained in a manner appropriate to the life and passion he brought to our industry.

Vim Kumar (ex-AT&T reporting to Olivier)

Olivier was a natural born leader and never afraid to roll his sleeves up and "get dirty" with the folks on the floor.  Talk about motivation!  To see your director actually doing something about a problem instead of talking about it really gets you going to get the job done.

Charles Kalko (Skype, ex-eBay)

Olivier is best remembered for his passion to for the environment and his belief that we all can make a difference.
