At Apple, we strive to reduce our impact on climate change, find ways to use greener materials and conserve resources for future generations. This video was shot on location at Apple Facilities. Now more than ever, we will work to leave the world better than we found it.

Steven Levy tells the Apple Green Data Center Story

Green Data Centers are accepted in the data center industry, and the three who have the mindshare are Apple, Google, and Facebook.  Steven Levy has told the Google story many times, and Facebook.  With this lengthy post Steven tells the Apple Green Data Center story.

Apple Tries to Clean Up Its Carbon-Spewing Ways With New Data Centers

On a stunning cloudless day in the Nevada desert, Lisa Jackson stands with her back to an array of advanced solar cells, peering across a low chain link fence at NV Energy’s Fort Churchill Power Generating plant just a few hundred yards away. The 1960s vintage facility has two giant boilers rising from the scrub brush, belching steam and god knows what else. It couldn’t be more different than the futuristic tract where Jackson is standing, with its gleaming rows of curved mirrors and palm-size silicon wafers silently drawing energy from the blinding sun. It’s like a contrast between a phone booth and an iPhone.

The post is long and the most interesting part is at the end.

Since this wasn’t my first data center, I was able to contrast Apple’s with the competition’s. In many ways, a data center is just a data center, a bunch of computers you only get to see if you endure multiple retina scans to open up the doors. Yet there are subtle hints that this is an Apple facility, even if Jony Ive didn’t draw up the plans. The outside of the administration building has some sweet design elements, like decorative strips of terra cotta paneling in three shades of red, giving it a feeling of a desert lodge. The halls are festooned with huge, neatly hung photographs of tiny details iPhones and other Apple devices. Even the computer rooms seem to have an Apple vibe—they’re not so industrial. The doors to the hot aisle have frosted glass, like lavatory doors at a hip restaurant. The air-cooled facility is relatively quiet; unlike some other data centers, no earplugs required. You get the feeling you could probably eat off the server floor.

Apple acquires a 3-3.5MW Hydroelectric Power Plant for Prineville DC, no Dam required

News is starting to spread on Apple’s acquiring a hydroelectric power plant for its prineville data center.

Details that the data center crowd cares about are here.

Under the proposal, the 45-mile Hydroelectric Project will not have a dam. EBD Hydro plans to divert water from the irrigation canal, run it through turbines and generate enough electricity to power between 2,100 and 2,450 homes.

The pipes and turbines will be located about two miles north of Haystack Reservoir, several miles east of Culver, according to documents filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Power generation will only take place when water is running in the canal. Except for stock runs, most irrigation districts shut off irrigation water in the winter months.

EBD Hydro began the process more than two years ago, Gordon said. While it has been difficult, the company appreciated the support the project received from the governor, state and federal lawmakers.

The Rural Energy for America Program offers funding to help rural businesses with renewable energy projects and those that increase energy efficiency, according to the news release.

I’ll be in Bend at the of the month for the kids ski race.  i’ll see if I make a run to any of the spaces, but most likely not.  If anything I am going to the Bend, OR breweries

Some of my favorites are Deschutes and Boneyard.

Deschutes

Deschutes BreweryEst. 1988, Bend – The one and only “original craftster” brew pub, formerly known as Fish Brewing! Stop by  the now two-story pub, aptly  named “Brew 1”, that started the craft brew industry in Bend. Woot! Visit the Deschutes Brewery page.

Boneyard

Boneyard Beer CoEst. 2009, Bend – When Tony Lawrence launched his brewing company, he went straight to the “boneyard.” In different jargon, you might say he went to a used-car lot searching for a classic vehicle. Them bones are tasty! Read more on theBoneyard Beer Co page. Cheers!

Apple is planning to build a second mid-size data center on its property in Maiden, North Carolina, which currently has one 500,000 sq ft facility and a smaller, 21,000 sq ft one.

The company has filed papers for a permit with Catawba County that describes a 14,000 sq ft data center at the site, Hickory Record reported. Plans in the paperwork include a building with office and other ancillary space and a data hall cooled by 11 air conditioning units.

29 years ago I joined Apple in 1985, and you can see when all the Apple employees joined in order

An Apple friend texted me yesterday morning that she found my name in the list of Apple Employees just posted on Fri Jan 24, 2014.

I was just getting on a plane to SJ and we got a chance to catch up when I landed.  Her challenge was trying to find her name on the poster.  Knowing that I joined Apple in Mar 1985 helped her figure out where her name would be.  While looking out the window we saw Apple employees who probably weren’t even born when the Mac was shipped.  The summer of 1985 was when there layoffs due to slow sales of the Mac and hiring was quite slow for a year after I joined.

Damn, feel old knowing I joined Apple 29 years ago. :-)

What is this list?  Apple created posters with all the Apple employees from #1 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak to the present.  I was lucky to have a friend find my name, saving me the effort to figure out how I would get to the right poster.  There are ten different ones in the employee areas. Maybe this a test for the ex-Apple employees whether you have a friend who is still at Apple and will spend the time to find your name.
